Style guidesWhat is casual chic?
The dress code, explained.
"Casual chic" and "elevated casual" show up on invitations, restaurant websites and office party emails, and almost nobody explains them. Here is what both dress codes mean, how they differ from smart casual, and exactly what to wear.

What does casual chic mean?
Casual chic is a dress code that sits between casual and smart: relaxed, comfortable pieces worn in a polished way. Think dark jeans or tailored trousers, a crisp shirt or fine knit, a blazer or a good coat, and clean leather shoes. It should look effortless, never sloppy.
The easiest way to understand it: take an outfit you would wear on a normal weekend, then upgrade every piece one level. The hoodie becomes a fine-knit jumper, the trainers become loafers or clean leather sneakers, the joggers become straight jeans or tailored trousers. Same comfort, more care.
Casual chic vs elevated casual vs smart casual
Dress codes are a ladder. Here is where each one sits, from most relaxed to most formal.
| Dress code | What it means | Typical outfit |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | Anything clean and comfortable | T-shirt, jeans, trainers |
| Casual chic | Relaxed pieces, styled with care | Fine knit, dark jeans, loafers, a structured bag |
| Elevated casual | Almost the same as casual chic, common for restaurants, events and menswear | Oxford shirt, chinos, suede loafers, an overshirt or light jacket |
| Smart casual | A step dressier: tailoring starts to matter | Blazer, tailored trousers, shirt or polo, leather shoes |
| Business casual | Office wear without a suit | Trousers or a skirt, collared shirt or blouse, smart shoes |
Hosts use these words loosely, so treat the table as a guide, not a rulebook. When an invitation feels unclear, it is always fine to ask, and dressing a touch smarter beats being the most casual person in the room.
The casual chic dress code in six rules
- One polished piece per outfit. A blazer, a crisp shirt, tailored trousers or a structured bag lifts everything else.
- Fit beats price. Trousers that break cleanly on the shoe and sleeves that end at the wrist look expensive on anything.
- Better fabrics. Wool, cashmere, cotton poplin, linen, silk and good denim. Avoid shiny synthetics and athletic fabrics.
- Clean shoes. Loafers, ballet flats, ankle boots, simple sandals or minimal leather trainers.
- Keep it calm. Neutrals with one accent colour are the easiest route. Big logos read casual, not chic.
- Skip the no-gos. Gym wear, ripped jeans, flip-flops, wrinkled shirts and anything you would wear to clean the house.
Casual chic outfits for women

- Blazer and a dress: a simple midi or slip dress with an oversized blazer and flats or block heels.
- Wide trousers and silk: tailored wide-leg trousers, a silk camisole or blouse and a fine cardigan over the shoulders.
- Jeans, done properly: dark straight jeans, a crisp white shirt, loafers and a structured leather bag.
- Knit and skirt: a fine knit tucked into a midi skirt with leather ankle boots.
- The easy summer look: a striped shirt with tailored shorts or white jeans and leather sandals.
Casual chic and elevated casual for men

For men, casual chic and elevated casual mean the same thing in practice: no suit and no tie, but nothing that looks like weekend loungewear either.
- Knit and chinos: a fine merino or cashmere crewneck, chinos and suede loafers.
- Oxford and denim: an oxford shirt, dark jeans, a navy overshirt or unstructured blazer and leather boots.
- Polo upgrade: a knitted polo, tailored trousers and minimal leather trainers.
- Colder days: a wool overcoat over a crewneck, pleated trousers and loafers or Chelsea boots.
What to wear by occasion
- Dinner or a restaurant: dark jeans or trousers, a silk top or fine knit, loafers. Men: shirt or knit, chinos, leather shoes.
- Wedding or garden party: a midi dress or tailored trousers with a silk top. Men: trousers, shirt, optional jacket, no tie.
- Birthday or drinks: a blazer over a simple top with straight jeans, or a slip skirt with a knit.
- Office party: what you would wear on your smartest office day, plus one fun piece like a statement earring or a good coat.
- Gallery, brunch or a first date: any of the outfits above. Casual chic is made for these.
Casual chic, the Stockholm way

Questions answered
What is casual chic?
Casual chic is a dress code between casual and smart: relaxed, comfortable pieces worn in a polished way, like dark jeans or tailored trousers with a crisp shirt or fine knit, a blazer or good coat, and clean leather shoes.
Can you wear jeans to a casual chic event?
Yes, as long as they are dark or clean mid-blue, well fitted and free of rips. Pair them with something polished on top, like a shirt, a fine knit or a blazer.
Can you wear trainers with casual chic?
Clean, minimal leather trainers usually work. Running shoes, gym trainers and anything scuffed do not. When in doubt, loafers are the safe choice.
Is casual chic the same as smart casual?
Not quite. Casual chic is one step more relaxed: jeans and knitwear are normal and a jacket is optional. Smart casual leans dressier, with tailored trousers, collared shirts and a blazer more often expected.
What does elevated casual mean?
Elevated casual means everyday clothes in their best version: a knit instead of a hoodie, loafers instead of trainers, chinos or tailored trousers instead of joggers. It means almost the same as casual chic and is used a lot for restaurants, events and menswear.
What should I wear to an elevated casual wedding?
Women can wear a midi dress, or tailored trousers with a silk top, with flats, block heels or sandals. Men can wear tailored trousers or chinos with a shirt or fine knit and loafers; a jacket is a good idea, a tie is not needed. If the invitation is unclear, ask the hosts.
