Stockholm style:
the guide to casual Scandi chic.
The relaxed, minimal way people dress in Sweden's capital: neutral colours, relaxed tailoring and a few good pieces worn on repeat. What defines the aesthetic, the clothes to own, eight outfits to copy, the Swedish brands behind it and how to bring the look into your room.

What is Stockholm style?
Stockholm style is a minimalist, casual-chic way of dressing associated with Stockholm, Sweden. It is built on a neutral colour palette, relaxed tailoring, quality basics and very few logos. The goal is to look put together without looking like you tried hard.
The look grows out of Swedish design's love of function and simplicity, and the idea of lagom: not too much, not too little. Long, cold winters reward good coats and smart layering, and a culture that values sustainability encourages buying fewer, better pieces.
Online, "Stockholm style" and "Stockholm aesthetic" took off as a fashion trend and a decor trend at the same time, which is why the same words describe both an outfit and a bedroom full of black-and-white posters. Both share the same idea: calm, clean and a little bit cool.
The Stockholm aesthetic in five rules
- Neutrals first. Black, white, grey, oatmeal, beige, camel and navy make up most of the wardrobe. Colour comes in small, muted doses: a soft blue shirt, a chocolate-brown bag, one deep red.
- Relaxed proportions. Oversized on top, cleaner below, or the other way round: a big blazer with a short skirt, wide trousers with a fitted knit.
- Fabric over trend. Wool, cashmere, cotton poplin, linen, leather and good denim. Pieces are bought to last for years, not for one season.
- Few, simple accessories. One leather bag, small gold or silver jewellery, a wool scarf and sunglasses. Logos stay out of sight.
- Casual chic, never sloppy. In the Stockholm world in Style AA we put it this way: tucked-in but never starched. Effortless on the surface, sharp underneath.
Stockholm style clothing: the essentials
You can build almost every Stockholm style outfit from these pieces.

Stockholm style for women and men
For women
Play with proportion: an oversized blazer over a mini skirt with ballet flats, a slip skirt with a chunky knit, or straight jeans with a striped shirt and loafers. Keep jewellery small, hair simple and the bag structured.
For men
A long overcoat, crewneck knits, pleated trousers and straight jeans do most of the work, finished with loafers or Chelsea boots. The fit is relaxed but never baggy, and logos stay off. Swedish labels like Acne Studios and Our Legacy are good references for the menswear side of the look.
Stockholm vs Copenhagen vs Old Money style
All three get grouped together online. Here is how they differ.
| Stockholm | Copenhagen | Old Money | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colours | Black, white, grey, camel, navy | Neutrals plus bold colour and prints | Cream, navy, camel, forest green |
| Shape | Relaxed, oversized tailoring | Playful, mixed proportions | Classic and closely tailored |
| Key pieces | Long coat, blazer, straight jeans, loafers | Printed dresses, colourful knits, trainers | Cable knits, polo shirts, pleated trousers, loafers |
| Feel | Calm, minimal, casual chic | Fun and expressive | Heritage and quiet luxury |
Stockholm style is one strand of Scandinavian fashion. If you like its calm but want a more polished, heritage feel, the Old Money world is the natural next step. See every style world.
Stockholm style brands: Swedish fashion brands to know
- Investment: Acne Studios, Toteme, Filippa K and Rodebjer, all based in Stockholm.
- Mid-range: Arket, & Other Stories, J.Lindeberg and Tiger of Sweden.
- Affordable: H&M and Weekday.
- Menswear and denim: Our Legacy and Nudie Jeans.
- Bags: Sandqvist, from Stockholm.
You don't need Swedish labels to get the look. Fit, colour and fabric matter far more than the name inside. Style AA isn't affiliated with any of these brands.
Stockholm style room decor, posters and wallpaper

Online, Stockholm style also describes a room: white walls, black-and-white posters and collages, a leopard or animal-print accent, chrome or glass lamps, linen bedding and a few vintage finds. The same black-and-white collages are popular as phone and laptop wallpapers.
The rules are the same as for the clothes: a calm base, one or two bold accents, and nothing that shouts.
